Before the jack-o'-lantern became a pumpkin, it had considerably humbler beginnings.
The Halloween tradition that eventually gave us the glowing pumpkin on the porch has roots in Ireland and Britain, where people carved frightening faces into turnips and other root vegetables. When Irish immigrants carried those traditions to America, they encountered something considerably easier—and considerably larger—to carve:
The American pumpkin.
