Long before Halloween meant plastic pumpkins filled with candy, people went door to door asking for food in exchange for prayers for the dead. The tradition became known as souling, and it forms part of the long history surrounding All Hallows' Eve.
Penelope “Pepper” Graves, funeral director and professional observer of poor decisions, has her own assessment of how things have changed:
“They used to call it souling. You got food in exchange for prayers for the dead. These kids just get candy and skip the effort.”
